Location: studio in Sanger (directions)
Goal: Learn the history and basics of the encaustic painting technique.
Description: Artists have been using wax as a medium for centuries. The recent popularity of encaustic has created a new interest in the medium. Learn about the encaustic technique and experiment with the materials yourself.
Materials: All materials will be provided, but you may bring anything that you'd like to experiment with:
- collage materials
- fabric
- old drawings or paintings on paper
- bisque ceramic pieces (fired but not glazed)
- wood panels or scraps of wood
Textbook: Not required, but definitely recommended if you think you’d like to pursue encaustic on your own: The Art of Encaustic Painting by Joanne Mattera (available from Amazon)
About the Instructor: Deanna Wood received a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Painting from Texas Woman’s University. She also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in Graphic Design from Texas Woman’s University. Her encaustic paintings have been featured in many national juried, group and invitational shows. Her solo show, Seeking Shelter, was featured recently in Lamoni, Iowa; Manhattan, Kansas and Douglasville, Georgia.
